Florida Driver’s License: What to Bring to the FLHSMV

Getting your Florida driver’s license? The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) has specific document requirements based on your citizenship or residency status. To make the process smoother, here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need.  Always check the FLHSMV website for the latest details and requirements.

Required Documents for U.S. Citizens

If you’re a U.S. citizen applying for a Florida driver’s license, you’ll need to provide proof of identity, Social Security number, and residential address. Some commonly accepted documents include:

  • Proof of Identity – Birth certificate or valid U.S. passport
  • Social Security Number – Social Security card, W-2, or 1099
  • Proof of Residential Address – Two different documents with their Florida residential address are required.  See list of acceptable documents on the FLHSMV website.

These are just examples—other documents may also be accepted. For the full list of requirements, visit the FLHSMV U.S. Citizen page.

Required Documents for Immigrants

If you’re a lawful permanent resident applying for a Florida driver’s license, you’ll need to provide proof of your immigration status, Social Security number (if applicable), and Florida residency. Some commonly accepted documents include:

  • Valid Immigration Documents – Green Card (I-551), I-797, or other DHS-issued documents
  • Social Security Number – If applicable
  • Proof of Florida Residency – Two documents, such as a rental agreement or bank statement

Additional documents may be accepted. For the complete list of requirements, visit the FLHSMV Immigrant page.

Required Documents for Non-Immigrants

If you’re a temporary visitor applying for a Florida driver’s license, you’ll need to provide proof of your legal status and Florida residency. Some commonly accepted documents include:

  • Valid Passport and Visa – Or an I-94 form
  • DHS-Approved Immigration Documents – Showing legal status in the U.S.
  • Proof of Florida Residency – Two documents, such as a utility bill, employer letter, rental agreement, or bank statement

Other documents may also be accepted. For the complete list of requirements, visit the FLHSMV Non-Immigrant page.

Required Documents for Canadian Citizens

If you’re a Canadian citizen applying for a Florida driver’s license without a U.S. visa, you’ll need to provide proof of identity and Florida residency. Some commonly accepted documents include:

  • Proof of Identity - Valid Canadian Passport or Birth Certificate
  • Secondary ID – Such as a Canadian driver’s license or Social Insurance card
  • Proof of Florida Residency – Two documents, such as a mortgage statement, utility bill, rental agreement, or bank statement
